Māori fleeing were hunted down and were butchered upon escaping
On the last day the defenders made a break through the defensive lines to the south on a 5km walk to the Puniu River. It is over this distance that many Māori were killed .
It wasn't just men who were shot, some of the women were hacked down, shot multiple times and slain.
