In March 1864 Cameron orders his troops to march around Paterangi defences on to Rangiaowhia. Rangiaowhia was the economic hub of the Waikato, with the largest settlement of Māri, critical to supply the Kingitanga in the war effort. However this was the place they'd sent their women, children, elderly and disabled. There was panic and terror amongst the people. There was an attack on some people who were sheltered in a whare (house), eventually the decision was made to set alight that whare. Several people burnt to death inside including two children.
